Background of the study

Social media has revolutionized communication in Nigeria, where platforms like Twitter and Facebook are rife with innovative syntactic constructions. Hashtags, as linguistic tools, have become integral to online discourse, serving as markers for topics, sentiments, and cultural phenomena. This study conducts a comparative analysis of syntactic structures in Nigerian social media posts, focusing on hashtag usage. It explores how hashtags influence sentence construction, word order, and the overall flow of digital texts (Ibrahim, 2023). The research examines the interplay between traditional syntactic norms and emerging digital conventions, revealing how users blend abbreviated forms with standard grammar to create concise yet impactful messages. Through corpus analysis of social media posts, the study aims to identify patterns of syntactic innovation, determine their communicative effectiveness, and assess their impact on audience engagement. The findings are expected to contribute to our understanding of language evolution in digital contexts and offer insights for enhancing digital communication practices (Nwachukwu, 2024; Akinwale, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the widespread use of hashtags in Nigerian social media, little systematic research has been conducted on how they affect syntactic structures. The absence of detailed analysis on the interaction between hashtags and sentence construction hampers our understanding of digital language evolution and may lead to misinterpretation among users (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

• To identify syntactic patterns in hashtag usage.

• To analyze the impact of hashtags on overall syntax.

• To recommend strategies for improved digital writing.

Research questions:

• What syntactic structures emerge in social media posts with hashtags?

• How do hashtags affect sentence construction?

• What are the implications for digital communication?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of syntactic innovation in Nigerian social media, informing educators, linguists, and digital content creators on how language adapts in the online environment (Akinwale, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses on syntactic structures in social media posts and does not extend to other digital communication formats.

Definitions of terms:

1. Syntax: The rules governing sentence structure.

2. Hashtags: Metadata tags used to group digital content.

3. Social Media Posts: User-generated content on online platforms.
